The Brood, also known as the Devouring Swarm, are a nightmarish, insectoid alien civilization that has emerged as the dominant power in the known galaxy. Driven by an insatiable hunger to spread their genetic code and assimilate all other lifeforms, the Brood have carved a bloody path of conquest and extermination across the stars.
The origins of the Brood remain shrouded in mystery, with many xenobiologists theorizing that they may have evolved from a highly aggressive, parasitic species on a remote, inhospitable world. What is known is that the Brood's physiology is that of a massive, hive-based insect civilization - they possess a rigid, chitinous exoskeleton, multiple limbs, and an array of organic "bio-weapons" that can be adapted for a wide range of offensive and defensive purposes.
At the core of the Brood's collective is a powerful psionic hive-mind, which allows the entire species to function as a single, coordinated entity. Every member of the Brood, from the lowliest drone to the towering Brood Queens, is linked to this gestalt consciousness, sharing information, memories, and a singular drive for expansion and genetic supremacy.

The Vigilants, with their massive robotic armies and psionic-enhanced defenses, have proven the most formidable opponents to the Brood's advance. The two civilizations have engaged in numerous cataclysmic conflicts across contested border regions, with neither side able to gain a decisive, lasting advantage. Meanwhile, the fragmented, decentralized Nomads have been forced into a constant state of evasion and retreat, using their quantum mastery to outmaneuver and disrupt the Brood's assaults, but lacking the resources to mount a true counteroffensive.
As the Brood's conquest continues unabated, the entire galaxy lives in fear of the day when the hive-mind's hunger can no longer be sated, and the Devouring Swarm sets its sights on the total annihilation of all other forms of sentient life. The Vigilants and Nomads teeter on the brink of collapse, desperately seeking any means to halt the Brood's inexorable advance before it consumes them as well.
