Michael Hegstrand, better known by his ring name "Animal", was an American professional wrestler who rose to fame as one half of the iconic tag team The Road Warriors in the 1980s. Teaming with Joseph Laurinaitis (Hawk), Hegstrand's rugged, hard-hitting style and imposing physique made him one of the most dominant tag team performers of his generation in the NWA and World Championship Wrestling.
Animal (Hegstrand) and Hawk (Laurinaitis) first began teaming together in the early 1980s on the independent wrestling circuit. Their combination of size, strength, and aggressive offense quickly made them stand out, and they soon caught the attention of NWA bookers.
Debuting in the NWA in 1983, Animal and Hawk rapidly rose through the ranks, establishing themselves as a true force to be reckoned with in the tag team division. Their hard-nosed, brawling-based style and imposing physical presence made them a handful for any opposition.
The duo's first NWA World Tag Team Championship reign came in 1984, when they defeated The Freebirds (Michael "PS" Hayes, Terry Gordy, and Buddy Roberts) for the titles.
